The season is winding to a close so we've prepared an update explaining how everything is going. It's a transparent picture of both the good...and the inevitable things that never go as planned, and how we respond. Overall we are incredibly happy with the season!
On our farm we grow Non-GMO crops. In media and online there is often a great deal of misinformation on this subject that is either inaccurate or biased, or both. In this update, I've tried to offer a simple explanation of what GMO crops are and why we chose not to use them. We are most definitely not anti-GMO, just feel that there is a time and a place for them to be used. I am far from an expert on this subject but try to clear up our stance on it.
This is our first wheat crop ever. This update covers the current condition of the crop and general information on the benefits of wheat. There is also some information on what we will be doing after wheat harvest, including a diverse cover crop mix, frost seeded red clover, and double crop beans.
Nitrogen is one of the most misunderstood and misused fertilizers. In this update, I outline some general information on nitrogen, the consequences of its misuse and a new nitrogen management strategy we're using. Variable Rate nitrogen puts more where it is needed, and less where it is not, allowing us to significantly decrease our fertilizer use and cost.
This update describes how our corn planting went and goes into detail about some of the trials and on farm testing we're doing this year as well as some possible future directions.
This is our first ever season update. In it, I describe some of our approach this year and some general thoughts on chemical weed control and other weed control methods.
